THERE will hopefully be Guys galore in Mary Tavy next month, as the village stages a special bonfire night party on Sunday, November 4.

The event will include a large bonfire, fireworks, a Guy Fawkes competition, food stalls, including a hog roast, a cider and beer tent, music, games and a raffle.

For the Guy Fawkes competition it is hoped that children and adults, individuals and groups, will get busy making a Guy, which will then be burned on the bonfire.

There is a small prize for the Guy that the community votes as the best, but the organisers hope for Guys of all sizes and shapes as it is about the taking part, not the winning.

Because the Guys are to go on the bonfire all materials must be flammable — mainly fabric and newspaper with no metal, no polystyrene, and no substantial plastic.

Guys should be brought to the Coronation Hall at 5pm, along with a box for the voting slips which should be no larger than a shoe-box with the maker's name underneath and a slot about 5mm x 50mm on the top.

Bonfire night will take place in the recreation ground, starting at 5pm and going on into the evening.

The stalls will be lit but other areas will be dark so everyone is asked to bring a torch. There will be glow items on sale, light sabres, finger lights, devil ears and many more, all helping to light up the field. There is no charge for entry to the event and all are welcome.

This event follows the very popular Beacon Bonfire for the Queen's Jubilee in June, when the organisers, the Mary Tavy Jubilee Group, were urged by residents to put on a similar event in November.

It is just one of several projects of the Mary Tavy Jubilee Group, with others announced in their latest newsletter which has been issued this week.
