A PIONEERING new approach is helping farmers in West Devon tap into their land's natural resources for a profit making enterprise.

Devon Wildlife Trust's (DWT) Confidence in the Countryside training programme is revolutionising the industry by helping farmers to 'view their land with a fresh pair of eyes'.

The scheme offers practical training on making the most of the wildlife resources on farmland which in turn encourages visitors to stay longer and to purchase produce stamped with a wildlife-friendly seal of approval.

DWT communications officer Simon Berry said: 'Farmers may create a wildlife conservation area where educational access can be introduced or a farm shop to sell delicious local products after a revitalising walk through the well signposted countryside.'

DWT director Paul Gompertz said: ' Farmers cannot be expected to put money into wildlife conservation as a public service for which they receive no reward.

'The long-term solution is to create markets in which good conservation management generates a fair income, some of which can be put back into managing the farm's wildlife assets.'

Landowners from West Devon have trained with the Confidence in the Countryside programme since its introduction last year. There are places available on next year's programme and farmers interested can contact Simon Berry on 01392 279244.
