STAFF from Okehampton Camp have been among those getting involved in a series of walks raising more than £20,000 for Combat Stress.
Project Longstride is the brainchild of Warminster-based businessman Tim Shapland, business services director for the defence support company Landmarc Support Services.
Tim has done a series of walks covering 100 miles, and saw the opportunity to make use of the network of public footpaths surrounding the UK's military training areas to get access to some stunning yet seldom visited scenery in each of the locations visited.
Each walk was open to willing volunteers — nicknamed 'Longstriders' — including staff from the army's ranges at Okehampton, to help swell the funds.
Tim walked on the public footpaths surrounding the camp as part of his efforts.
Having made an initial pledge to raise £10,000, Tim and the team's efforts have seen them raise £20,000 for Combat Stress.
The charity is the leading charity specialising in the care of veterans' mental health and is currently supporting more than 5,400 ex-service men and women suffering from conditions like post traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety.
At the end of 100 foot-weary miles Tim said: 'I'd like to say a huge thank you to all those who have supported me, either directly or indirectly and, more importantly, helped bring in funds for Combat Stress.
'On their behalf and on behalf of the ex-servicemen and women that they support, please accept my, and their, heartfelt thanks.'
