THE finals of the South West of England Open winter foursomes competition, sponsored by The Plumb Centre, Plymouth, were played at Yelverton Golf Club. The competition had started in October, with 68 pairs competing, including 19 professionals and six ladies.

The final was played over 36 holes with all four players from Yelverton, with George Frude and Chris Gunn playing against Paul Isaac and Peter Franklin. Honours were even during the morning round, and they went to lunch all-square. The match stayed tied until the 36th hole when Chris Gunn holed a long putt to seal victory on the final green.

With the competition sponsor this year being The Plumb Centre, it was fitting that Chris holed the putt, as he is a qualified plumber. Chris was also a winner, with his brother Nick, in 1985 and 1986.

In the third and fourth final David and Margaret Jeffs played Wayne Tulley (Elfordleigh) and Colin Gentry (Tavistock).

David Jeffs had already secured the £1,000 first prize in the professional competition, and playing with his mother, from Stover Golf Club, won a close match on the 18th green. The plate final saw local pair James Holt and Anthony Bradley(Yelverton) come back to beat Alan Johnston and Alex Lock (Holsworthy) on the final green.

The trophies were presented by John May from The Plumb Centre, the competition sponsors.
