A TAVISTOCK-based group which has been meeting for more than 200 years is to celebrate its bi-centenary in the town this month.

The Bedford Masonic Lodge will celebrate with a meeting at Kelly College, followed by a banquet in the town hall.

Richard Searle, spokesman for the Lodge, said: 'The Lodge has met continously for the last 200 years but was in fact founded in 1791, although some of the early records were lost.

'Bedford Lodge has met in various locations, including the King's Arms Inn, the Exeter Inn and the Bedford Hotel, but since 1901 has held its meetings in the

Masonic building in Pym Street.'

Mr Searle said many well-known Tavistokians have been members of the lodge during its history — it has also supported many charities throughout the years.

'The members are obviously looking forward to this special celebration and will be joined by many visitors from other parts of the country — over 200 people are expected to attend the event,' said Mr Searle.

Money raised by the bi-centenary celebration will be donated to the Radio Devon Chestnut Appeal, Dartmoor Rescue Group and West Devon Talking Newspapers for the Blind.
