A GROUP of residents from East Cornwall rallied together last week to look after the welfare of a homeless person.

The man, believed to be in his early 40s, was discovered sleeping rough outside the Tamar Valley Centre, Drakewalls, during the recent storms that ripped through the country.

Around ten residents across Gunnislake, Lower Dimson and Chilsworthy provided the man with food, hot drinks and a tent.

Landlords from the White Hart Inn at Chilsworthy Ian and Amy Durnall also gave the man a hot meal each night for four days.

Residents even went as far as to contact charities to see if they could find housing for the man — and by Friday last week locals heard that he had been found housing in Cornwall.

Amy said: ‘We fed him every night hot takeaway pub food and the others got him a tent, tea, coffee and snacks etc. Not to mention calling and emailing to try and get him housed.

‘All the community came together to help him. It’s nice that we could help him and how many people offered to help him and were willing to help — he was appreciative of all of our help.’

Amy added: ‘This brought us all together.’

On Callington police’s social media page, East Cornwall PCSO Jo Addems said: ‘I’m pleased to be able to tell you that through multi agency working we have managed to find accommodation for our man at the Tamar Valley Centre.

‘He will shortly be on his way to somewhere dry and warm in Cornwall.

‘I really want to pass on my gratitude to the local community for your kindness and support shown to this gentleman in his time of need, it really shows the amazing community spirit that is alive in the Tamar Valley. Thank you all.’
