THE Mid Devon Hunt and Lamerton Hunt branches of the Pony Club are celebrating fantastic success at last weekend?s National Tetrathlon Championships in Gloucestershire. The Mid Devon won the Novice Girls team event by a huge margin of nearly 400 points, with Charlotte Rowe taking the individual Championship. The team members were Charlotte and Rebecca Rowe, Lucy Almond and Lottie Trerise, and they led from the start, with all four achieving or matching their personal bests in the pool. Previously, nerves have affected the girls? shooting, but training sessions with Arthur Harvey have helped them massively and they all shot really well, with Charlie and Lucy setting new personal bests. They heeded Ali Hirst?s advice in their running, and with just the riding phase to go, they were comfortably in the lead, but drama was just around the corner ? Lucy?s pony picked up a minor injury whilst exercising, and could not compete. Former branch member Hilary Thompson received a phone call from the team on Saturday evening, and immediately and very generously offered the loan of her wonderful horse Fred (Sainthill Phoenix). Lucy overcame her understandable nerves and rode a really plucky round on a horse she had never even sat on before, and Charlie assured victory for herself and the team with a really stylish clear round. All the Mid Devon?s competitors attributed their success to Patrick Bugg, their trainer. In the novice boys event, the Lamerton Novice Boys team were the highest placed team from the UK, only narrowly beaten to the overall Championship by competitors from Eire. Their feat was all the more remarkable as they competed as a team of only three, Adam Sandercock, Kennan Fowlie and Rob Fowlie. Adam achieved the Best Swim and the Best Shoot of the competition, and all three got around the challenging cross country course in some style. The Mid Devon?s Will Leech also did really well in the Novice boys event, with a stunning personal best run and a wonderful clear round on the youthful veteran Topstar. In the Open competition, Dan Preece of the Lamerton did brilliantly to come second, with a phenomenal swim which ensured he also took the honours for the Best Swim of the competition. Toby Ryan of the Lamerton, who has recently returned from representing the UK in Canada, also swam and ran well, scoring over 1,000 points in each event. Best from the East Cornwall and the South Devon Moorland?s James Chaffe and George Mills put in very strong performances, with James managing one of very few clear rounds on an extremely challenging cross-country course, as did Will Parke from the Four Burrow. In the Open Girls competition, the area was represented by Freya Carlson from the Dartmoor and Alice Mills and Storm Faulkner from the South Devon Moorland.
