CHRISTMAS has officially arrived in Okehampton, with the erection of the town's brand new Christmas lights last Sunday.

On Sunday morning, a team of hardy helpers met outside Donald's to put lights on over 120 Christmas trees, while the new lights were erected by a team of electricians on cherry pickers. Within four hours, the whole town was done.

Don Rooke from the Chamber of Trade was happy with the operation: 'The whole morning was a success. Not just Chamber members helped, but private companies, local organisations and many residents helped make easy work of it.

'We owe a great debt of gratitude to Okehampton United Charities. They donated a substantial amount of money enabling us to update our existing lights which had got tired and worn. With extra help from the town council, we are able to get phase one of the Christmas lights up this year.'

Local businesses are also responding to the chamber's request for donations for the lights. Mr Rooke said: 'Even in these difficult times, businesses are beginning to respond and make sure we keep our Christmas lights the envy of Devon.'

Edwardian Evening takes place on Thursday December 8, when everyone will be able to see the new lights and enjoy Okehampton's late night shopping experience, the mayor's carol service, and the usual stalls, children's rides, barbershop singers and attractions to create a traditional festive spirit in the town centre.

A Christmas hamper, kindly donated by Waitrose, will go to one lucky draw winner that takes place on Edwardian Evening.

Mr Rooke said: 'Edwardian Evening is a great time to showcase our Christmas shopping. The Chamber of Trade wants to show everyone exactly what Okehampton has to offer. We hope people will realise how important it is to support our local shops in these times and buy most of their Christmas right here in Okehampton.'
