DISCOVER what life was like in the 15th century at Buckland Abbey over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Light will be cast upon the Dark Ages when the Medieval Free Company set up camp, showing the colourful side of medieval life with various historical characters ready to pass on their knowledge. The traditional image of the Dark Ages included rats, persecution, the plague, a poor diet and primitive conditions, but everyday life also involved creative crafts, interesting costumes, fascinating food and a bit of archery. Jonathan Cummins, visitor services manager at Buckland Abbey, said: ?This weekend will provide a great chance for locals and holiday makers alike to experience the sights, sounds and smells of life in Medieval Britain, all alongside the ancient Great Barn at Buckland.? There is no extra charge for this popular event which is open all day from 10.30am to 5.30pm between August 26 to 28.
