A COMMUNITY centre is £1,000 better off thanks to local Freemasons.

The centre in Lifton were gifted the money as part of an twice-yearly give-away by the organisation in Devon.

Every Spring and Autumn, Freemasons from around Devon meet to give support totalling in excess of £40,000 to local groups from the ‘WAKE fund’, which has distributed more than £600,000 since its first donations in 2001.

Lifton Community Centre was nominated as a worthy cause by members of the local lodge.

The Right Worshipful Brother Ian Kingsbury JP, Provincial Grand Master for Devon, presented cheques to 25 deserving causes last week at The Mount Edgecumbe Masonic Hall in Plymouth.

Charity representatives accompanied by a Mason from their nominating lodge were able to enjoy a buffet supper, have a look around the Lodge and receive their cheques totalling £25,000.

Lifton Community Centre trustee Martin Hall said: ‘The cheque will help us provide Lifton’s Community Centre with the crockery and cutlery that is so necessary for the smooth running of most functions that will be held.
