FARMERS are offering visitors the opportunity to find out more about hill farms on Dartmoor that are usually closed to the public.

Four farms are taking part in a pilot programme of farmer-led walks organised by the Dartmoor Hill Farm Project.

Each event will be a general walk around the farm but with a focus on a different farming theme: Wednesday, April 24 — new life at Huccaby Farm; Sunday, June 23 — sheep and shearing at Moorlands Farm; Thursday, August 15 — working dogs at Middle Merripit Farm; Sunday, October 6 — apple harvest at North Hall Manor.

The programme starts with a walk around Huccaby Farm with Dave and Shirley Mudge, hearing about their farming life and seeing the livestock, farming systems, habitats and historic features on this traditional Dartmoor Farm.

They have a pedigree herd of South Devon cattle and run a flock of north country Cheviots and the walk will offer plenty of chances to see some newly born lambs and calves.

The two hour walk is most suited to adults and older children; it is unfortunately not suitable for people with buggies or wheelchairs. The walk will go ahead whatever the weather, so visitors should come prepared.

Refreshments are not provided, so people should bring plenty to drink and a snack.

This event is £4 for adults and free for children. Booking is essential, places are limited to 25. Due to the presence of livestock, visitors should not to bring dogs to this event, apart from assistance dogs. Book through the national park visitor centre, Princetown on 01822 890414.
