THE £1.6-million redevelopment of the old Carr's Garage site in Tavistock's Plymouth Road has taken a further step towards completion.
EBC Construction has finished the piling and foundations for the development, and the steel framework has been erected.
Robert Wood, area director for EBC, said: 'It has taken the contents of 15 large concrete mixing lorries to finish the building's foundations and 35 tonnes of steel for the frame of the building as part of the first phase of the redevelopment.'
The project includes a new £500,000 purpose-built library and IT suite, and offices for Capita Business Services and West Devon Homes.
There will also be ten rented flats on the site — the first new dwellings to be completed for West Devon Homes, the company which took over the borough council's housing stock last year.
Other features include a new pedestrian walkway and canal bridge linking to the Meadows. Completion for the project, which was ceremonially started in March by West Devon mayor Margaret Garton, is scheduled for February 2001.
The development was designed by Tavistock architects Scarratt and Martyn — planning supervisor is Ward Williams Associates of Tavistock.
