ONE of the country?s most borrowed writers has chosen Tavistock Library as a location for one of the launch events for her new book. Lilian Harry from Devon, most famous for her popular novels set during world war two, is launching her new book ?The Bells of Burracombe? tomorrow (Friday). The fictional village of Burracombe on the edge of Dartmoor is the idyllic setting for this tale of rural life in the 1950s. It is a community adjusting to life after the war, recovering from physical and emotional damage and looking forward to a peaceful future. Lilian has visited Devon since 1960 and some years ago returned to settle in a village near Dartmoor, just like Burracombe. She uses all her personal experience and local knowledge to bring authenticity to the village and its folk. Lilian, also known as Donna Baker, reached the top of the borrowing figures for Britain?s Public Libraries issued in January 2004 with more than 355,000 readers taking her books home to read. Tickets for the event, which is from noon to 2pm, cost £2 from Tavistock Library. Those attending will be able to have lunch with Lilian and discuss the book.
