DEVON Library Service is introducing environmentally friendly jute ?bags for life? for borrowers of books, DVDs and CDs from West Devon libraries. The bags are on sale for £2 as part of the county council?s ?Make Devon Greener? initiative to promote the environment, reduce waste and increase recycling rates in the county. The scheme is supported by the ?Don?t let Devon go to Waste? partnership which has teamed up with library staff to find a practical and lasting alternative to the plastic bags offered ? until recently ? to help borrowers transport their goods home. Executive member for culture Councillor Sheila Hobden said: ?The bags are a great way of helping the environment as well as being practical and protecting the books on the way home. ?The bags look good, are very hardwearing and of course can be used time and time again.? The library service is also encouraging people to re-use old plastic carrier bags, and will cease handing out new plastic bags to library users.
