PLAYING their first home game in the Devon League Lewdown entertained Whitchurch in the local derby.
Top of the table Whitchurch won the toss and asked Lewdown to bat first on a drying wicket.
A fine opening spell by S Lavis restricted the early flow of runs, however solid innings of 65 by Olly Brown and 50 by Dean Summersby allowed captain Brenden Worth the opportunity to boost the innings score with a rapid 46. 201 runs on a drying wicket was a challenging target for Whitchurch, who were full of confidence after 4 successive wins.
Charlie Hughes bowled very well, conceding only 20 runs off his 13 overs. After this Whitchurch were always under pressure, and at 122 for 6, the game looked all over.
An entertaining knock of 45 by P Newton and 24 no by Dean Elliott, bought them back into the game until a fine diving catch by Dean Summersby broke the partnership.
Lewdown completed the job quickly with well disciplined bowling from Ade Edmonds, Dave Ball and Greg Sleep. Having moved up from the Tamar League, Lewdown are a competitive force in the E Division West, and are looking at progressing through the Divisions, with their young team.
Next game, away to Exeter South, on Saturday.
