LEWDOWN Seconds welcomed Calstock to the Recreation Field on Saturday in the Tamar League. Having lost the toss Calstock were asked to bat first and were soon in trouble. Debutant Keith Drew took two early wickets with his swinging medium paced deliveries. John Lambert and Mark Rundle batted sensibly, allowing Calstock to score 162 for the loss of 5 wickets. In response, the young Lewdown team were indebted to an unbeaten 57 from the experienced Steve Batstone, a quickfire 45 from Martin Squire and 17 no from Brenden Worth at the end. Lewdown 17 points, beat Calstock 6 points by 4 wickets, with just 6 balls remaining. Previously, Lewdown played Buckland at home on a cold and blustery day. Batting first, Buckland scored 165 all out with Geoff Pollard top scoring with 57. 15 year old Harry Geering excelled with 5 wickets and Ryan Bridgeman 3 wickets. Batstone, Bridgeman, Squire, Geering and Worth all got a start for Lewdown but were unable to build a match-winning innings. Paul Tomkies bowled well for Buckland taking 6 wickets. Buckland beat Lewdown 2nd XI by 37 runs, and inflicted Lewdown?s first defeat in 18 games, dating back to June 2004. In their first game, Lewdown entertained Milton Abbot. Milton Abbot were restricted to just 53 all out with fine bowling from debutant Tom Wellard taking 3 wickets for 9 runs.Lewdown took only 12 overs to knock off the runs with Richard Hayden top scoring with 22 not out. Three of last season?s Lewdown 2nd XI have now progressed to the 1st XI, playing in the Devon League. Their young replacements have performed admirably and reinforce Lewdown?s respected coaching and youth set up. Next game away to Milton Abbot.
