THE wonderful response to the recent tsunami disaster gives ample proof that we in the developed world do care and can reach out to those vulnerable people in the developing world. This vulnerability, however, is not just to natural disasters, but to those that are man-made as well. One good way of continuing to help the recovery by the tsunami victims, and so many others disadvantaged in the Third World, is to trade fairly with them. Fairtrade fortnight is in March, between the 1st and the 13th, and to highlight this issue which has such a huge impact on the lives of so many people, the Oxfam Campaign Support Group would like to hold a meeting, probably on Tuesday March 8, to hear from all those interested in working towards making Tavistock a Fairtrade town. Our fellow stannary town Ashburton has already started the process, which includes meeting goals in the areas of avoidability, promotion of and commitment to Fairtrade in the local area. Could any local people with an interest in Fairtrade contact me via the Oxfam shop in Market Street so we can move forwards together on this important issue? Claire Heatley Watts Road Tavistock
