CHILDREN at Whitchurch School enjoyed meeting a variety of visitors during a multi-cultural week recently.
The week was held to celebrate the richness of a range of cultures and focussed on speaking and listening, learning how stories are created and passed on.
The week was funded by the Whitchurch School Association and DAISI (Devon Arts in Schools Initiative) helped organise the performers.
There was a two day visit by Becky Jeffry, who taught the children about the Yoruba creation myth from Nigeria.
Don Newton spent several days at the school, telling stories from other cultures and working with individual classes to foster the skills of storytelling.
He also worked with the teachers after school on mask-making skills.
Helen Tang Ying, currently working at Tavistock College, shared myths and legends from Chinese culture with the children. There was also a visit from New Zealand rugby player Brett McCormack, who taught some of the children the traditional Haka chant.
