AN urgent call is going out for people who can spare a small amount of their time to help present a unique part of Devon's heritage — the National Trust's Finch Foundry in Sticklepath, near Okehampton. The foundry is an unparalleled example of Devon's industrial past, being the last remaining water powered forge in England. Set amidst beautiful Devon countryside, the foundry and its gardens surprise many visitors who thought industrial heritage was simply 'dirty and boring'. Roger Boney, the custodian of Finch Foundry, said: 'We have a great team of enthusiastic volunteers helping us already at Finch and we are hoping more people would like to join us. 'We are looking for people to bring the history of the foundry to life, through helping with demonstrations of the machinery in the foundry, visitor services volunteers to welcome visitors to the property and help them get the most from their visit and shop volunteers. 'These are just some of the roles on offer; there are lots of opportunities to help.' 'Local people who enjoy history and meeting the public, who feel able to give a regular time contribution, are ideal candidates. 'All ages are welcome and no previous experience is required, as necessary training will be given. However a willingness to learn is essential.' Those interested in volunteering are invited to come along and discuss the numerous benefits of volunteering at Finch and have a good look around. 'This really is an opportunity to join and meet with friendly, like-minded people who have a passion their local heritage,' said Roger. Volunteers have the opportunity to contribute to a charity, learn new skills, meet new people, gain experience of helping at a heritage site and receive agreed travel expenses.
