ONCE again (for the fourth time!) David Bagshall of Grindhill (Letters, Times November 21) is trying to change the sequence of the traffic lights in Okehampton town centre.

How he can seriously believe that his proposals will not be at the cost of safety and may even improve matters (his words) is beyond me.

It is difficult to see how resetting the timing and operation of the lights could be achieved without returning the town centre to the bad old days with traffic shooting about in every direction at once and petrified pedestrians making dangerous dashes for cover or cowering marooned and mesmerised on traffic islands.

It?s about time we all realised that there is no magic formula for reconciling the natural constrictions of a country town laid out and built in the horse and cart age with the explosion and speed of today?s transport.

As long as we insist on the convenience of driving our own cars, surely the only safe and sensible compromise is to regulate the traffic in a way that enables all road users, including children, mothers with prams and the elderly, to know exactly where the potential danger is coming from at any moment.

David has issued a challenge for change to the traffic authorities; I make a plain appeal ? leave the lights alone!
