DERRIFORD Hospital's oncology department has received a £6,500 boost thanks to the efforts of a charity fundraising walk in West Devon.

In May 2011 around 150 walkers took part in the third annual Leafy Lanes walk around Lydford and Bridestowe, organised by Pals of Plymouth Oncology Outpatients and Chemotherapy (POOCH).

Pals of POOCH recently visited the radiotherapy department to present their latest donation, bringing their fundraising total to a fantastic £6,500 so far. The fundraisers have also commissioned a painting by local artist, Laura Wall, for the oncology waiting room.

Organiser David Hocking said: 'I am full of praise and admiration of the work done by Derriford oncology unit.

'Raising money, and having a bit of fun doing so, is our way of thanking the department for their tremendous work. The money raised will help so many in the future.

'Through my own experience I would urge anyone who has any doubts or worries about their health to visit their GP, and give themselves the best chance of recovery.'

Sue Lamb, radiotherapy manager at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: 'we are very grateful to the Pals of POOCH for their continuing support and fundraising efforts for the unit. The money raised will be used to buy equipment to aid accurate positioning of patients receiving radiotherapy treatment.'

The Leafy Lanes walk takes place annually and is supported by Pals of the Oncology Centre, the Fox and Hounds Hotel, Bridestowe and a team of walkers from the radiotherapy department.
