TAVISTOCK Town Council is looking for community-minded residents to become members of the authority.

After 12 people stood in the May elections, there are five seats still vacant across the three electoral areas (wards) in the town.

The council, which is one of the largest of its type in the country, has 17 councillors who are collectively responsible for a range of services, including Tavistock Pannier Market, town hall, parts of Duke Street, the Meadows, Whitchurch Down and Plymouth Road Cemetery, plus community events and activities such as the Goose Fair and garden festival.

The council also provides grants to community organisations and administers the £2-million Townscape Heritage Initiative Scheme to support economic regeneration and the historic environment.

Former town mayor Councillor Harry Smith said: 'Local councillors play an important role in community life and help to make our town a great place to live, work and visit.

'We want to encourage local people from all backgrounds to consider serving their community in what can be an immensely fulfilling and challenging role.'
