TAVISTOCK Golf Club's captain's chosen charities have raised many thousands of pounds over the years and many worthwhile causes have benefited from the generosity of club members.  

This year £6,000 was raised for CHICKS (Country Holidays for Inner City Kids) and the Downs Syndrome Association — worthwhile charities that club captain Richard Wraith had selected.  At the annual Captain's Cocktail Party a cheque for £3,000 was presented to Jo Westerman of CHICKS and another for the same amount to the Down's Syndrome Association.

The mens' monthly medal and Stableford competitions were played despite the awful weather conditions.  There was close scoring in the Stableford —  first in division one was Steve Dickinson with 38 points closely followed by Martin Channon and David Bryant both with 37.  Division two — 1, John Hayward and Simon Bridgewater, both 37, 3, Mike Burbidge, 35; division three, 1, Andy Cunningham, 39, =2, Andy Furse and Chris Sivyer, 36.  The scoring was also tight in the monthly medal.  In division one — 1, Gary Purford with nett 72 on countback, 2, Richard Smith, 72, 3, Mike Apps 73; division two, 1, Andy Rich nett 67, 2, Alan Greening 69, 3, Bill Phillott 73; division three — 1, Roger Ward nett 72, 2, Ian Nye 73, 3, Mike Henderson, 74. 

The four ball better ball was cancelled for the second month running because of the weather.

Weatherwise the ladies were not so lucky as the men though a few hardy souls braved the elements and played in the monthly Stableford. 

In division one Kerry Baker had 30pts as did Sue Coles and Fran Horton.  Division two 1, Patty Congo, 33pts, 2, Rosemary Rae, 31, 3, Gail Reed 30; division three, 1, Sue Bailey 28pts, 2, Margaret Burn 26, 3, Barbara Chalk 25.  However, driving rain and strong winds proved too much even for the most dedicated lady golfers to play in the February EWGA medal.     

The juniors played their first Stableford of the year and the scoring was extremely close with three juniors coming in with 40pts. 1, Will Notley on countback from 2, Alexander Humphreys and Sam Jessop.
