TWO rinks of Tavistock Short Mat Bowling Club players travelled to play against Abbotskerswell on Saturday and returned home having lost the match 32-58 after being defeated on both rinks played. Skip George Blackburn and his squad of Rob Powell-Thomas, Liz Percival and Shirley Blackburn scored six shots on the 18th end of their game to take the lead for the first time, but ended the match as 20-27 losers thanks to some steady scoring by their opponents. Skip Bill Ashe and his crew of Sandra Ashe, Viv Powell-Thomas and Tom Percival were defeated 12-31 after playing an extended 24 end game during which they won eleven ends, ten of them by one shot. Friday evening saw ten Tavistock players travel to face Merton for a match which had been enlarged to allow several extra Merton players to join in. The Tavistock players returned home having won 78-57 after winning three of the rinks and achieving a draw on the fourth. Skip Amy Emsley and her team of Brian Ellicott and a guest player won 26-22 while skip Dave Summers and his crew of Anne Summers, Tom Percival and a guest won 16-7. Skip Bill Ashe and his squad of Mike Felles, Viv Powell-Thomas and Sandra Ashe won 21-13 thanks to them winning two of their ends by five shots. Skip Geoff Cork and his team of Bob Powell-Thomas and a guest player fought out a triples game during which the lead changed hands several times, with the Tavistock crew finally picking up two shots on the last end to conclude their match as a 15-15 draw.
