Devon Premier Cup
third round
Tavistock 1
Shamwickshire Rovers 0
THE only change in the line-up from the previous week was Chris Gott replacing Kevin Russell with Gary Williams and Darren Halfyard again on the subs bench.
There was a fierce wind blowing up the Crowndale valley which made ball control difficult but Tavistock coped better with the conditions having to face them in the first half.
The Lambs almost scored in the first minutes with Danny McTighe shooting just over after Bradley Swiggs had set him up.
Gott then saw his shot go just over after Swiggs had again been the provider.
Despite the wind in their backs the 'Shammies' attacks were rare occurrences and it was not until 20 minutes before they had a shot blocked in the area.
The Lambs almost went into the lead five minutes before half time when McTighe was put through but Andy Walters parried his first-time shot for a defender to clear it.
The second half was one-way traffic as Tavistock looked for the opener. Gott shot over and James Cole had a shot blocked all within the first five minutes.
Tavistock were finding it difficult to break down the visitors' defence with shots and headers going wide or cleared away. Craig Hodge saw his shot cannon off the keeper only for Swiggs to head against the crossbar.
On the hour Shamwickshire had their best chance when they saw a header from a corner bounce off the top of the crossbar.
The visitors found themselves down to ten men when John Gosling was blocked just outside the area. From the resultant free kick Gosling placed his shot just wide of the post.
There was only five minutes remaining when Williams replaced the injured Gott and was soon in action sending in a cross for Swiggs to head wide.
It was deep into injury time with extra time looming before the deserved breakthrough came. Gosling made a final run down the wing before crossing to Swiggs, who kept control to play the ball off for Williams to shoot low across the keeper and send the Lambs into the next round.
