Torpoint 5

Lamerton 1

THIS game was only a contest for 45 minutes on a sloping quagmire of a pitch at HMS Raleigh. Ironically, it was with the slope where the game got away from Lamerton, because at half-time they had fought back well from a goal behind to go in level.

Torpoint started well and their left-winger was causing problems to the visitors; his whipped cross was met by Brian Stacey to score, after 15 minutes.

Lamerton came back with some decent football and equalised on the half hour. Steve Lake showed his strength to win a free kick, which he took himself; Ross Hann flicked it on and the ball made its way to Rich Searle, whose shot was fumbled by the keeper, allowing Tony Jones to knock in the rebound.

Lamerton gained confidence and were happy to get to the break level in the tough conditions, but they should have gone in leading. Hann hassled the Torpoint defence causing the ball to break to him on the edge of the box, with just one defender on the line; he floated his effort toward goal, which clipped the bar and went over.

The second half saw the worst possible start for Lamerton. Another cross from the left again met by home striker Stacey, who lost his marker at the back post to score with a downward header. Stacey was a huge problem for the Lamerton defence all game, but the turning point of Hann's missed chance and Torpoint's immediate reply proved crucial.

Just a few minutes later a freak free kick flew over Pete Daniels' head for 3-1 and another speculative long-range effort made it four.

Suddenly Torpoint were running away with it and Matt Williams sealed a miserable day for the away team when he headed in unchallenged from a corner.

l On Saturday Lamerton are at home to Launceston, kick-off 2.30pm.
