The F A Cup Preliminary round Tavistock 4 Bridport 2 IT was the first venture for the Lambs in the F A Cup for more than 50 years and they did not disappoint to get through the first hurdle against a side a league above them in the National pyramid system writes Eric Pinch. It was a very wet and windy Langsford Park that had the majority of supporters sheltered in the grandstand and despite the conditions both sides played their part in what turned out to be a very entertaining game. The Lambs got off to a dream start in their very first attack when Steve Daly?s ball glanced off Richard Jackson?s head to allow Marc Conday to go down the wing unmarked to cross low for Lee Coxon to fire home. Kevin Parker then tested keeper Martin Peters with a cross but the latter did well to tip the ball over the bar. But the euphoria of the one goal lead was soon extinguished as the visitors from Dorset were back on level terms on seven minutes. It was a quick breakaway out of defence that saw the Lambs then fail to clear their lines for the ball to drop kindly for John Richie 20 yards out to put the ball in to the bottom corner. All of a sudden it was game on. Both sides had further chances in the half. Peters saved from a Glynn Hobbs effort; Parker?s run down the left saw him cut back for a John Morris effort. The Lamb? keeper Andy Meeds denied Tony Cunningham to come off his line and block his shot and moments later Chris Skinner shot weakly when well placed but 1-1 was about right at half time. The start of the second half was almost identical to the first. Daly?s ball over the top was not defended and Conday picked up the loose ball on the edge of the area to cut across it and turn to send the ball back across the keeper and low into the net. A Hobbs run saw Peters save his shot. He then had to tip over a great drive from Parker before the Lambs increased their lead on 58 minutes. Hobbs did well to beat his marker out wide on the right to send in a cross that Morris got on the end of to head down and home into the bottom corner. The visitors gave themselves a lifeline with 20 minutes remaining when from a Dan Wise corner Cunningham glanced a header home. But their comeback was short lived as the Lambs got back their 2-goal cushion four minutes later. Coxon and Morris combined at the halfway line to feed the ball up to Conday just inside the visitors? half. He had it all to do but turned inside his marker, go forward and send a low drive into the bottom corner for a great goal. Andy Hall hit the side netting moments later for the visitors, but the Lambs were not going to be denied as they recorded a deserved victory that sends them into the first qualifying round with an away fixture against Toolstation Western Premier League side Willand Rovers on Saturday, September 16.
