ENVIRONMENTAL and recreational charity South West Lakes Trust recently held its second annual Champion Volunteer?s evening at Roadford Lake tea room.

The awards evening, designed to acknowledge the valuable contribution volunteers make towards the work and aims of the trust, was attended by Lady Mary Holborow, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Cairns Boston, chairman of the trust, and trustees, along with volunteers and guests from the region.

Lady Mary presented awards to the volunteers who were introduced by trustees and director Evelyn Stacey.

Awards included contribution to fishing, watersports, conservation and education, along with awards for young volunteers, contribution to aims of the trust and a special award for outstanding contribution.

Tim Pearson began volunteering with the trust on work experience from Okehampton College last year.

He has since continued his volunteering and received an award as young volunteer.

Tim has helped rangers at Roadford Lake with day-to-day duties and is very enthusiastic and hard working. He also helped at several events at Roadford Lake during 2003.

The award for contribution to watersports went to Liz and Brenton West from the Bude area, who have helped at Upper Tamar Lake watersports centre throughout the season.

Working with the instructors they have provided enthusiasm and drive and assisted wherever possible with the children?s club, youth events and other activities.

Their son, Dexter, won an award for being a young volunteer, again helping with watersports.
