Duchy Premier Lamerton 4 St Dennis 1 AFTER five weeks without a game, Lamerton finally returned to action against St Dennis, a team they had never defeated before. Lamerton looked sluggish in the first half and went 1-0 behind after ten minutes. On the attack, the ball was lost and a St Dennis defender hit a long ball upfield, which striker Lee Rickard latched onto. He was allowed space and cleverly lobbed Hunter in the Lamerton goal, who had rushed out into no man's land. It was only five minutes later the equaliser came; Kev Swift slotting in Dan Healy's run down the left, who went one on one with the keeper to score. The rest of the half petered out with no more goals or clear-cut chances. Lamerton took the lead right after the break. Good work down the right from Simon Kelly enabled Rich Searle to take the ball into the penalty area and fire home with his right foot. St Dennis struggled in the second half with only the impressive Rickard looking to threaten. He twisted and turned on several occasions to get shots off on goal, often a whisker away. Swift, Steve Gibbings and Healy had great opportunities to get the third for the home side, all with the goal gaping, but it was super winger Steve Lake, coming off the bench to score his first goal for Lamerton that put the match to bed. He anticipated a cross from the right to beat the defender to the ball and hit a low drive from the edge of the box past the keeper. The St Dennis keeper was excellent throughout making a number of good saves, but Lake's drive was too good this time. Lake grabbed the headlines near the end with his second of the game: St Dennis trying to play offside got it horribly wrong, leaving their defence near the halfway line. Lake played the whistle for a clear run on goal and he skipped past the keeper for a nice easy tap-in.
