AN exciting initiative to engage Callington youngsters with the town, has been launched with help from Plymouth Argyle and the police. CATS (Community Action Through Sport) is a project designed to ?promote and award positive community action? through sport. CATS was developed in Bude and established through a partnership group led by the police and Bude?s college ? and has recently been adopted in East Cornwall. The aim is to encourage residents, particularly young people, to recognise the part they have to play in the present and future development of the area, while reducing anti-social behaviour. The Callington CATS programme is ?Kick Off? ? a fun-based street football initiative for boys and girls aged 12 to 17 of all abilities. Participants get the chance to meet players from Plymouth Argyle, win free tickets to matches and develop their football skills. ?Kick Off? will take place every Friday from 7pm to 8.30pm, starting tomorrow (Friday) for six weeks. It will cost £1 per session. The programme is aimed at young people who are not involved in club-based football but enjoy the game and want to become involved and develop their confidence. Police Insp Martin Williams said: ?We have been delighted with the enthusiasm of the young people and their commitment to the programme and we hope it will be a success in Callington.? Callington Community College has identified some students at the college to act as ?Kick Off? ambassadors to help promote the programme. The ambassadors will attend assemblies at the school and work with the local Police Community Support Officers to help promote the scheme around the town.
