Kelly College 1st XV 50

Devonport High School

for Boys 1st XV 7

KELLY 1st XV romped to victory over their city rivals last Wednesday after a crushing second half display.

On a warm but blustery afternoon, Kelly found the opening half frustrating. The forwards, led by Thomas Robinson, failed to create the quality fast-ball the backs needed to press home the advantage. Nevertheless, Calvin Chan scored an early try and Edward May slotted a penalty before DHS scored their only points of the game. At half-time, the score stood at 15-7 to Kelly College.

Christopher Anderson came from the bench to play fly half and immediately the game began to have more shape and a pattern. He linked the forwards and the backs together and activity took place on or around the gain-line. Tries from Nicholas Boot-Handford and William Grainger extended the lead.

Thomas Partridge and James Bruna made good runs through the midfield but unfortunately there were too many turnovers. Nevertheless, in the final quarter, victory was sealed with Kelly romping home 50-7.

• Confidence was high the following Saturday as the team took the long journey to Downside School in Somerset. This was the inaugural fixture between the two sides and despite a courageous effort in the second half Downside proved just too strong in almost every department, eventually winning 3-59.

This week sees the first round of the Devon U18 Cup competition come to Tavistock, as Kelly College take on Exeter College at home, kick off at 2.30pm

IN a hard fought fixture on Saturday Kelly College Colts XV were victorious over their visitors.

Kelly opened the scoring with a try from wing Alex McCarthy after four minutes. Downside replied two minutes later after their centre ran in under the posts, having intercepted a loose Kelly pass in midfield. This was converted. The rest of the first half belonged to Kelly, with further tries from William Pickard, Iain Court (2) and Charles Brereton. Pickard added two conversions to make the score 29-7 in Kelly's favour at the interval.

The Kelly forwards were instrumental in the scoring spree and the preparatory work put in by the coaches from Plymouth Albion was much in evidence.

The second half was a little less one-sided but Kelly outscored the visitors by two tries to one with McCarthy and Pickard adding to their tally.
