A YOUNG Kelly College student is celebrating after smashing a senior world swimming record at a competition held in Sheffield recently.
David Hill is only 13 years old but managed to take the senior world 50 metres backstroke record at the National Open Short Course Championships held at Ponds Forge, in a time of 33.85 seconds.
David is classified S9 disabled, because one of his arms ends just below the elbow.
But Kelly swimming coach Robin Brew said David?s swimming is so impressive he can hold his own with able-bodied swimmers.
Robin said: ?He?s actually faster than some of his able-bodied contemporaries and he?s got bags of potential ? it?s looking good for a place with the paralympic team for Athens.?
Robin said David only joined Kelly College in September, but his hard work in the pool was paying off, with a further first place in the 50m butterfly, two seconds in the 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke and a third in the demanding 200m individual medley at the Sheffield competition.
