Rugby Downside School, Bath 26 Kelly College 27 KELLY registered their second win of the season. But they started badly, gifting the home side a try under the posts after a dropped ball in midfield. Kelly?s fly half James Falvey reduced the deficit with a well struck penalty after 20 minutes. Downside lengthened their lead after their strong forwards drove over the Kelly line. Kelly realised they were better out wide and began to spin the ball away from the slower, Downside forwards. Kelly passed the ball with great speed and skill for wing, Dominic MaCarthy, to score in the corner. James Falvey converted again. In the first half, Downside dominated up front, and were gifted another try after an interception just before half-time, due to the Kelly backs trying to utilise limited ball, taking the score to 19-10 at the interval. Kelly realised how to play the second half, and after a few changes in tactics, took control of the match. Liam Yeo scored twice after some excellent breaks by centre partner Jack Newton. Kelly continued to play well into the opposition?s half. Richard Goldsby-West drove hard at the Downside line for flanker George Hall to score. James Falvey converted and at 27-19, Kelly looked safe. But with two minutes to go the Downside backs punished Kelly?s errors, and scored a try the length of the field to come within one point. In a nailbiting finish, the Kelly lineout did not panic and slowed the game down for the ball to be kicked well into touch. Hockey Exeter School 1st XI 3 Kelly 1st XI 1 A closely fought match found Kelly 1-1 at half-time against an almost exceptionally strong side, who had already beaten West Buckland in their fixture programme. After going down 1-0 after 15 minutes, Kelly rose to the challenge, including Chloe Bassett, who, making her debut for Kelly, scored after one of her fast attacking drives at goal. Emma Stacey made some great saves in goal, particularly one which was a powerful aerial shot at head height, ultimately keeping Kelly in the game. Newcomers Jenny Pollock, Georgina Killingbeck and Gabriella Murphy all proved their worth. After half-time Kelly controlled the game and linked passes strongly, demonstrating great team play. But with fatigue trying to get the better of Kelly, Exeter scored two goals in quick succession, both from one-off chances from open play in the final 12 minutes. Despite having a high proportion of possession in the second half and having stepped up to their pace nicely, Kelly were unable to convert their chances when in the attacking 25-yard area.
