NORTH Tawton teenager Karen Jones got more than she bargained for when she visited the South West's Pirate FM Radio stand at this year's Royal Cornwall Show.

Karen, a student at Okehampton College, was invited by the radio station, which covers the whole of Plymouth, West Devon and Cornwall, to play the Birthday Deal.

This involved picking the year, month and day of your birth from a giant pack of cards. In front of an audience of hundreds Karen managed all three and won the top prize of £2,000.

Overwhelmed at the time, it's back to business as usual for Karen at Okehampton College where she was recently presented with the cheque by Pirate FM's programme director Bob McCreadie and the mayor of Okehampton Christine Marsh.

Karen is studying all general subjects and has yet to choose her options, but she is particularly interested in authors and enjoys swimming.

As far as the £2,000 is concerned she intends saving most of it but will treat herself to some new clothes and has promised to buy her brothers a present.
