AT the end of the P&D Tennis League season, Yelverton ladies? A team retained their place in division 1 by finishing fourth, losing only to league winners Ivybridge A and St Budeaux A.

The new pairing of Karen Gasche and Julia Whetton was successful and they picked up some valuable points.

Helen Smith and Tizzy Shobrook gained a merit award for being undefeated in the first half of the season.

In the last A team game against Mannamead A, both clubs were only able to field one pair and Yelverton were grateful to Mags Berry for teaming up with Helen Smith. Thanks also went to Shirley Every and Emily Murray for standing in against Ivybridge A at the last minute, when sickness struck the Yelverton team.

In division 3 the ladies? B team also finished fourth. Their 5-4 win in the last match of the season agaist Whiteford Road away prevented Whiteford Road being promoted.

No regular pairings have been made in the B team because of injury and availability, but on two occasions when Angie Lynch and Fiona Spreadbury teamed up their opponents were tested in three long sets each time.

Angie Lynch and Joy Tynan received a merit award for taking the only set of the season from the young Torpoint sisters.

In their last match of the season Yelverton C lost 2-6 to league winners St Budeaux C. Val White partnered Jenny Kay and they picked up the two points.

Janet Strelling played in nearly all matches. Unfortuantely the C team will be relegated to

division 5 next year. The ladies? captain and team squad thanked Roger Froud for his coaching.

The men?s A team in division 2 took a gamble in the last match of the season hoping to pick up extra points.

Unfortunately Yelverton lost 5-6 and six sets conceded were the deciding factor. St Mellion A stayed above them by the narrowest of margins and avoided relegation.

The men?s B team?s hope of promotion were dashed by St Budeaux D who over the second half of the season went from the relegation area to promotion. The B team won two, lost two and drew one in the second half of the season and finished fourth in the league.

Yelverton Juniors, now under the guidance of Simon Murray, only fielded one team this season, which finished in the middle of division two. They played eight matches, winning four and losing four and nine juniors represented the club.

Saturday morning junior coaching with Roger Froud is still successful and has been split into four sessions, depending on ability and fewer youngsters in each group.

The P&D awards evening is being held on Thursday September 25 at the Duke of Cornwall Hotel in Plymouth. Anyone wishing to attend, please contact Ann Short. The club?s annual team supper will be held in early October.

The inter-club summer tournament reached its conclusion in most events on a hot Saturday afternoon at the beginning of July, when Simon Murray and Phil Gasche played for two and a half hours for the men?s singles title.

At one set all Simon fought back from 1-5 down in the final third set to take the set and the match 5-7, 6-2 and 8-6.

The ladies? doubles was won by Helen Smith and Fiona Spreadbury who beat Karen Gasche and Lyn Jones, and in the men?s doubles John Marshall and Tim Shobrook beat Peter Smith and Simon Murray in two sets.

The mixed doubles was finally conducted last week with Simon Murray and Ann Short defeating Helen Smith and Tony Falconer in a long two set match, the score 6-3, 7-6.
