THE countdown to the Okehampton Battle of the Bands has begun, with the first heat taking place on Wednesday July 18.

Sponsored by Stevens' Estate Agents, the Plymouth Inn and Herbs and Spices, this year's event promises to be the biggest yet, with 18 bands competing over three heats to claim a place in the Party in the Park finale.

As always, the heats are in the Charter Hall, but this year they have been moved to a Wednesday evening slot.

Doors for heat one, on July 18, open at 7.30pm with the first act on stage at 8pm. Admission is free but donations are encouraged, as the event runs thanks to the support of local people and businesses. There will be a licensed bar.

One of the organisers, Chris Hodgson, said: 'All that is needed to make this the biggest and best Battle of the Bands so far is an audience, so come along and enjoy a great night out.'

Heats two and three are on July 25 and August 1, with the 'Party in the Park' finale in Simmons Park on August 11. Each year the finale grows in scale, and this year organisers already have fire-eaters and other entertainers lined up. Ten-piece funk band Joey the Lips will also provide a rip-roaring end to the contest.
