WEST Devon Junior Life Skills and the Okehampton Festival are just two of the beneficiaries of the latest round of grants by Okehampton United Charity.

The charity trustees met at Okehampton College on June 26 and awarded four group grants and five sporting achievement grants.

The Art Okehampton 13 Festival, being organised to take place in August, was awarded a grant of £4,800 to buy materials to manufacture display boards.

The festival, running from August 7 to August 10, will be a visual arts event held at several venues around the town. The intention is to promote and create awareness and enjoyment of the visual arts, and of local and aspiring artists to a wide audience.

A grant of £1,014 was awarded to West Devon Junior Life Skills to fund the 78 Okehampton Primary schoolchildren who will be attending the event in September. It teaches Year 6 children vital new skills to keep themselves and others safe.

Okehampton Chamber of Trade was awarded a grant of £500 to hire a kitchen classroom for the Okehampton Festival, taking place on July 6.

The idea of the classroom is to show local people how to create healthy meals on a budget.

The Contraception Services were awarded £112.80 to print a leaflet advertising local contraception services.

Five sporting achievement grants were awarded, supporting young sports people in cricket, table tennis and muay thai kickboxing.

Trustees of Okehampton Educational Founation noted Okehampton College's current allocation was £36,734 and Okehampton Primary School's current allocation was £6,393.

They also noted applications for post-16 application grants for the past academic year had now closed, and the new application form for the 2013/14 academic year was available to download from http://www.okehamptoncharities.org.uk">www.okehamptoncharities.org.uk
