OKEHAMPTON Golf Club?s Dartmoor League team, having been at the top of the table for most of the season, had three difficult away matches to finish the season with ? away at Wrangaton which they halved 2 1/2 -2 1/2 and last Sunday?s match away at Dartmouth. On advice from the club professional, Ashley Moon, the team captain and club vice-captain, Paul Rattenbury, put one of the up and coming juniors into the team. Fourteen year old Jonny Rattenbury, 12 handicap, played in the third pairing with Peter Murphy and they had a wonderful game with Jonny playing to a 3 hcp. This was on a course he had never played before, ? even the Dartmouth team he played against were in admiration of this young man. The rest of the team did not disappoint, with Harry Hawking and Darren Prouse winning 1 up, Kevin Pedrick and Paul Rattenbury winning 2 up, Peter and Jonny winning 1 up, Malcolm Hooper and Adam Cook losing 1 down and Nick Heath and Neil Penfold losing 5-2 - this team were really up against it as they were playing a pair with the county handicap champion in it. This wonderful result means they top the leader board again with one match to play away at Bovey. Saturday August 5 saw a full turnout for the Brian Adam Salver (scratch) and Bill Webber Bowl (handicap) at Okehampton Golf Club. In perfect conditions the following scores resulted: Division 1, 1st, Mark Wonnacott, 69, net 60; 2nd, Evan Rees, 72, net 63; 3rd, Jonny Rattenbury, 77, net 65. Division 2, 1st, Ken Peckham, 77, net 60; 2nd, Colin Cornwall, 77, net 62; 3rd, Graham Millford, 80, net 62. Division 3, 1st, Dave Endacott, 86, net 60; 2nd, Rob Simpson, 90, net 63; 3rd, Tim Knight, 90, net 65. Congratulations go to Mark (Brian Adam Salver) and Dave (Bill Webber Bowl) winners. The veterans? section are continuing what looks like being their best ever season. On Tuesday August 1 they beat Tiverton 4-2 away, and on August 3 they beat Torquay 41/2-11/2 at home, resulting in a 7-5 overall win. The ladies of Okehampton Golf Club could not have had better conditions to play their club championship, it was dry, not too hot with a light breeze and the course was in beautiful shape. The fairways were not too fiery and the greens in wonderful order. The scores on the day reflected these perfect conditions with Marcia Holwill shooting an amazing gross 74 in the morning; this included a hole-in-one on the 125-yard par 3 fourth hole - she played a beautiful shot straight at the flag with her little 7 wood. This green is hidden from the tee but it did not take too long to find the ball at the bottom of the cup! Although her afternoon round was not quite so good, being 83, the 157 total for the two rounds was good enough by six shots to give her the Championship Cup and cut her handicap to 8. Penny Deakin was second with two very steady rounds of 80 and 83, total 163, and third with an 83 and 89 , total 172 was Dawn Phillott. The nett prize and salver was won by Lyn Hazelton with a net 66 and 72, with Penny and Marcia taking second and third place with net 139 each, Penny getting second on countback. The 18-hole competition was won by Chris Stevens gross 92 net 70, in second place was lady vice-captain Eileen Piper gross 102 net 71 and third was Trish Vick gross 93 net 73. Mo Huggins and Marcia Jones played the semi-finals of the Devon County Vets Knockout fourball better ball competition on Friday August 4. They were playing Woodbury Park at Stover. It was an extremely tough match with Mo and Marcia each giving five shots. However, they both played well, complementing each other throughout the match which they won on the 18th hole 2 up. This means they are now in the finals but have to wait and see who they are playing and where. Lady captain Maureen Howe and her partner Sue Glanville played in the Australian Spoons finals at St Austell on Thursday in gale force winds. The winning score was 29 points and though Maureen and Sue did not win they were in a commendable place of tied sixth with 26 points on the leader board.
