THE first ever sponsored walk in aid of Teenager Cancer Trust is to be held in Tavistock next month. Walk Three Villages will start at 10.30am on September 9 at the old air field in Leg O? Mutton. Participants will be given a route of the nine mile walk when they arrive. Half way along walkers will have the chance to opt out if they wish. The organiser of the walk is Ruth Harris, a local pilates teacher, who wishes to make this an annual event. Ruth said: ?I want to make people more aware of TCT. Young people need to understand this topic as six teenagers each day are dying with cancer in the UK.? TCT focuses on the needs of teenagers and young adults with cancer, leukaemia, hodgkin?s and related diseases by providing specialist teenage units in NHS hospitals. In many cases cancer in teens is not picked up early enough and symptoms are dismissed as growing pains or sports injuries. The charity funds and organises a multidisciplinary forum for professionals, an international conference on cancer and the adolescent, and a conference for teenage patients called ?Find Your Sense of Tumour?. Registration forms and t-shirts for the walk can be bought from Fullfords for £8 or by contacting Ruth on 01822 852507.
