RESIDENTS of the Lydford area are being invited to take part in a survey of Devon?s breeding birds.

The project has been organised by Action for Wildlife and includes a training event at the Fox and Hounds, near Bridestowe, this Saturday, April 26 from 10.30am to 1.30pm.

There will be a talk about local bird life from expert Bob Jones. Participants will find out which species of birds they can expect to see locally and how to recognise them by sight and sound.

There will then be an hour-and-a-half walk to put the new-found skills to the test and to pick up some extra tips in the field.

The event is part of the Nature for Real initiative being undertaken by Action for Wildlife in Lydford. The first event was held last September, a morning wildlife walk and talk along the lanes of Lydford.

Although this second event is aimed at Lydford residents, assistant project officer Sarah Mellor said people from outside the area were welcome to attend.

Beginners or those

already with some knowledge are invited.

Outdoor clothing, including stout shoes and waterproofs, will be essential, and participants are asked to take along binoculars and bird identification guides if they have them.

Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. No dogs are allowed.

The event is free and refreshments will be provided. Anyone with transport problems locally, or wanting to know more, is asked to contact Sarah on 01626 831072.

Armed with this new or updated knowledge, it is hoped people will continue to send in records throughout the breeding season from April 15 to June 30 to Bob Jones, the local co-ordinator.

All records will contribute to the new edition of the Devon Breeding Birds atlas, which will help understand how Dartmoor?s birds are faring.

Sarah said; This is a wonderful opportunity to learn some new skills which will enhance your enjoyment of the countryside, while contributing to a very important survey.?
