THERE's an opportunity to spend a fruitful day in the Tamar Valley next week, exploring a variety of orchards on the Bere Peninsula, to learn more about tree care and wildlife habitat creation. For anyone who would like to discover more about the ecology of orchards, or who would like to plant a new orchard/restock an old one, but need a little inspiration,or who is just enthusiastic about wildlife, this event is ideal. Up to four different orchards will be visited during the day, giving participants the chance to see first hand the different approaches to orchard management. The orchard safari has been organised by the Tamar Orchard Group and will be led by orchard expert Charles Staniland and Rosemary Teverson from the Tamar Valley AONB. Stephen Russell from the Tamar Valley AONB, said: 'Apart from the richness of their wildlife, traditional orchards can make an economically valuable contribution to the 'locally distinctive' character and quality of Devon and Cornwall's landscape. 'At one time, every farm and large garden would have had its own orchard of mixed fruit trees for domestic and other uses, including folklore and festivals. There now seems to be an ever-growing interest in orchards and the traditional local varieties of the Tamar Valley.' The event begins at 10am and should finish by 4pm. The event costs £5 per person.
