COULD we at Tidy Tavi use your columns to express our sadness at the passing away of John Warne? Tidy Tavi (originally called 'Friends of the Canal') was formed when John read a letter concerning litter in the canal in the Times in the summer of 2011.

He used his contacts in local councils to set up a meeting between them, South West Water and three completely amateur members of the public, who had responded to the publicity he had created.

His expertise and advice were crucial at the start and led to the popular and successful volunteer group of today. He continued to give his support and friendship even when gravely ill.

We have had a lot of help from many organisations and individuals since the formation of Tidy Tavi but it would never have got off the ground without his help at the beginning.

Those of us who were fortunate enough to know him did so for too short a time. He was an exceptional man. We shall miss him and should like to send our sympathy to his family in their great loss.

In affectionate remembrance,

Pamela Steele
