A WEST Devon rugby player is celebrating after making it to the national U19 team. Jo McBain, a 17-year-old A-level student at Okehampton College, plays for North Tawton Ladies ? but her rugby-playing career is about to go international, as she prepares to represent her country in Canada early next year. Jo, who is to play number eight for England, said she was ?over the moon? at her success. ?I never expected anything like this ? it?s still sinking in really. I keeping thinking ?I?m just a girl from Meeth and I?m wearing an England shirt? ? it?s incredible,? said Jo, who has been playing rugby for the last three years. ?I started training with North Tawton ladies when I was 14, but I couldn?t play with them because I was too young,? said Jo, whose talents were spotted after she obtained a place in the South West girls? rugby team. ?From there I went to a big regional festival. They had scouts there and they picked 30 girls from eleven squads to go to a performance camp at Loughborough,? said Jo. ?The England coach was there and he asked me if I?d like to go along to the England U19 trials ? I was pretty chuffed!? Jo said although she got through both trials, she didn?t dream she would eventually be picked for the team. ?I thought I was completely out of my league with all these girls who were playing for really big teams ? and I was playing out of my normal position,? said Jo, who is due to travel to London this week for fitness tests, prior to training which starts early next year. Her debut for England will be in Vancouver in February, when the team is due to play two matches against Canada. Jo?s mum Sue McBain said she was ?very proud? of what Jo had achieved. ?She?s done so well ? I don?t know why I ever took her to ballet lessons when she was little!? said Sue.
