FOLLOWING her top point score this year Okehampton horsewoman Jo Chisholm is on a mission to get into the British Endurance Riding team.

Mother-of-two Jo, 41, and her horse 'Grey Medlar' achieved the most points throughout the year in British Endurance Riding events across the West of England.

She completed 12 successful endurance tests which involve riding at speed over long distances, the maximum being 100 miles.

Jo has been riding since she was a toddler and has competed in different events but seems to have really found her speciality in endurance.

'I was never any good at showjumping — I used to get very nervous,' she said. 'With endurance you are just competing against yourself and it is very very satisfying — like completing a marathon I imagine.'

Her point score means she is now eligible for the national team and plans to take part in selection tests next season.

After putting competitive eventing on the back burner to bring up two small children, Jo is now ready to give it her best shot.

'My ambition is to get in the national team,' she said. 'It's hard work but you also have to have a bit of luck.

'It takes dedication to compete in this sport but I have been fortunate to have such a great family behind me especially my husband Andrew — I could not do it without him.'

There are moves afoot to try and make endurance riding an Olympic sport which would really raise its profile.

It is currently very popular in France and the Middle East.
