YELVERTON swimming star Jan Langton is celebrating astonishing success, following fantastic performances at the Cerebral Palsy World Games, held in Connecticut, USA, this month. Jan, an 18-year-old student at Tavistock College, came away from the games last week with three gold medals and four silvers. Helen Langton, Jan?s mother, said: ?The world games are the next biggest thing to the paralympics ?they involve all the sports, opening and closing ceremonies, medal presentations ? the lot.? Jan?s gold medals came from wins in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke. Her third gold came in the medley relay. Helen said: ?Jan was swimming the backstroke leg ? and the team broke the cerebral palsy world record time, which was fantastic.? Her silver medals were awarded in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m breastroke and 200m individual medley. Helen, who travelled to the USA with Jan?s father, Paul, said Jan was ?thrilled to bits? with her success. ?When she got her gold medal, the Union flag went up and they played God Save the Queen ? it was brilliant stuff,? said Helen. Jan?s successes have earned her a talented athlete sponsorship by the governing body of British swimming. It enables her to train six times a week at Kelly College under the guidance of former British swimming champion and Kelly?s director of swimming, Robin Brew. Jan, who is in the sixth form studying for a BTec early years diploma, has a break from competition for several months now, before competitions start once more in October. The talented swimmer still has her sights set on a coveted place at the Beijing Paralympics in 2008.
