ALL those with creative flair, a longing for the stage and a panache for performance are being sought for the 2008 Okehampton musical. Okehampton Song Tales community musical project is run by Devon's folk arts charity Wren Music, which have spent more than nine months researching the musical. They have liaised with people from Okehampton and the surrounding area as well as holding workshops with singers and musicians. Their endeavours have borne fruit with the musical play now having a full working script and a full score with lyrics. The musical's official title is 'Poles Apart?'. The script has been developed by writer Tim Laycock with community involvement at each stage. A spokesman for Wren Music said: 'Poles Apart? is a contemporary tale that draws on centuries of tales, stories, memories and reminiscences brought forward by the people of Okehampton. 'The musical will be staged in April 2008 and will be full of songs and music. It also offers a wide range of opportunities for people of all ages to get involved as actors, singers and musicians. 'There will be no auditions and all are welcome, whatever their age, although anyone under 14 should be accompanied by an adult.' The singing and music workshops will take place on Tuesdays, from 7pm to 9pm. The first session will be on Tuesday January 15. Wren Music say all are welcome and no previous singing experience is necessary. They would also like to invite any musicians along, although a basic ability level on an instrument is required. Acting rehearsals and workshops will take place on Thursdays from 7pm to 9pm, starting from Thursday January 17. Again, no previous experience is required. Both sets of rehearsals will be held at the Ockment Centre with each session costing £1. Wren Music, as well as looking for musicians, singers and actors, will need people to fill various backstage roles. Producer Marilyn Tucker said: 'We do have a great need for people to help out making scenery, props and costumes, as we don't have those skills in- house. 'We will probably have a costume-making day in a few weeks' time when we know how many people will be taking part and what costumes are needed. We'll welcome anyone with sewing skills — or a sewing machine! 'I am overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of people who've got involved with the music alone and I'm really looking forward to meeting more new people with the acting workshops starting. 'We can take as many people as want to join in with the project. We are delighted that Okehampton Primary School has come on board with their choir having a special role to play. Okehampton Community College's Big Band will also have a special part to play.' The project is a co-production between the Ockment Centre and Wren Music and the arts programme on BBC Radio Devon will be covering the play from its early development right up to when it reaches the stage. The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £17,200 towards the project and further funding has been received from Okehampton United Charities, Arts Council England South West and Devon County Council.
