OKEHAMPTON?s new look post office was this week officially re-opened by the town mayor Cllr Frances Luxton, following a major refurbishment scheme. Jean and Allenton Fisher, who took over the post office at the beginning of the year, have invested more than £30,000 in the business, which was closed for four days while refurbishments took place. Gone is the old-fashioned 1960s post office screen and in its place is a new three-position open plan counter, as well as a new secure position. Since taking on the business, Allenton has been given full bureau facilities at the post office, and now many foreign currencies are available over the counter. The shop has also been totally refitted and now sells an extended range of cards and stationery. Allenton said: ?This refit shows our commitment to Okehampton and we look forward to serving its residents for many years go come.? And Allenton paid tribute to the outreach post offices branches, particularly Belstone and Exbourne, for their help during the refit at Okehampton. ?They have given us such a lot of support, we are truly grateful to them.? Allenton said Okehampton Taxis had provided a shuttle service between Okehampton and Belstone post offices during the four-day closure, so residents were still able to access postal facilities. Town mayor Frances Luxton said it was a pleasure to be able to declare the new-look post office open. She said: ?It?s obvious that the new layout will make it easier for customers to access existing and new services that are now available. It?s good to know that Allenton and Jean have their customers? well-being at heart.?
