THERE is still time to join in with an exciting community musical project, being run in Okehampton this spring by Devon's folk arts charity Wren Music. The musical, which will be staged in April 2008, will have lots of songs and music in it, and will celebrate Okehampton's history and people over the centuries. A spokesman for Wren said the musical now has a new name: Carnival Capers. The spokesman said: 'It was originally to have been called Poles Apart? — but some people assumed that it would be all about eastern European migrant workers, so the name has been changed to give a better sense of the spirit of the musical. 'The musical offers a wide range of opportunities for people of all ages to get involved as actors, singers, musicians. There will be no auditions, and all are welcome, whatever their age, although under fourteens should be accompanied by an adult.' Singing and music rehearsals take place on Tuesday evenings, from 7pm to 9pm. All who wish to sing are welcome, and no experience of singing is necessary. Players of all instruments are welcome, although basic ability level on an instrument is required. Acting rehearsals will take place on Thursday evenings, from 7pm to 9pm. Once again, no experience is necessary — although seasoned actors will be very welcome — participants just need the desire to join in and have fun playing parts. Casting for actors will take place on Thursday February 14. Both of these sets of rehearsals will be held at the Ockment Community Centre in North Street, Okehampton. A contribution of £1 is requested for each session, to cover refreshments. The spokesman added: 'Wren Music is also very keen to hear from people who would like to take part or help out as carpenters, costume, props and scenery makers, stage managers, general backstage hands, and much more.' Anyone who is interested in taking part or helping out with the musical is welcome to call Wren on 01837 53754, or drop in to the Wren office at 1 St James Street, from 10am to 5pm any weekday to find out more. The project is a co-production between the Ockment Centre and Wren Music, supported by The Heritage Lottery Fund, Okehampton United Charities, Arts Council England South West and Devon County Council.
