North Tawton 30

Plymouth YMCA 6

YMCA made the trip with only 14 players, one of these arriving late for this important relegation match.

North Tawton started brightly with a try by Martin Horn at wing forward. This was followed by a penalty struck well by fullback David Grimes and it looked as though North Tawton were well in control.

There then followed some disjointed unfriendly exchanges which allowed the visitors back. YMCA were awarded a penalty which was quickly followed by a drop goal.

YMCA were taking control and hauled the lead back to 8-6 at half-time.

North Tawton, with the wind at their backs on the restart, executed a well rehearsed penalty move that saw Martin Hann at lock burst over for a try.

A five-metre scrum saw scrum half Dai Roberts whip the ball wide to centre Jamie Hoggins, who crashed over for a try, converted by David Grimes.

YMCA began to tire and following a breakdown in midfield North Tawton outside half John Stone ran in from the halfway line for an excellent try.

In the last quarter North Tawton lost hooker Lee Arnold. Kevin Avery took over and made a good move from flanker to front row.

A good win for North Tawton which should put them safe from relegation.

North Tawton Seconds 55

Bovey Tracey Seconds 3

A MUCH improved North Tawton strolled to a convincing victory to an under-strength Bovey.

The first try came from a basic move from a scrum where inside centre Lyndon Hughes crashed over.

Excellent rucking and mauling by North Tawton put fellow centre Jim Hancock over for a well worked try.

When winger Zak Matravers went over in the corner North Tawton looked to have the game wrapped up. But they went to sleep and allowed Bovey back. They were awarded a penalty but fortunately captain Joe Fewings replied with a penalty kick to leave the score at the interval 18-3 to the home side.

After the break North Tawton began to swarm over the visitors and a solo try by Nigel Denis set the pattern of play.

With the home side rampant in the loose play, it proved to be North Tawton seconds' best display of the season.

Martin Friggins playing well at scrum-half, picked up a try as did centre Lyndon Hughes, scoring his second.

Excellently worked tries by wingers Zak Matravers and Graham Killick saw the points tally mount then the best try of the match was scored by centre Jim Hancock.

Although much needs to be done in set play, North Tawton can take great heart after a poor start to their season.

Both sides are at home this weekend in friendlies, kick off 3pm.
