IT will be party time in Calstock this weekend, as residents of Lower Kelly are set to host a street party to take advantage of the road closure before it is to be re-opened next week. Work to repair the road after the landslip on Christmas day is nearing completion and a residents' group set up after the disaster, Friends of Lower Kelly (FOLK), has organised a street party on Saturday. Lower Kelly Road is due to be re-opened to vehicular access on Thursday, May 22, after nearly five months of being cut off from the national road network. In a bulletin sent to Lower Kelly residents, a Cornwall Council spokesperson said: 'The main structural wall concrete has been completed and waterproofed. The next steps are to back fill the wall and re-instate the foul sewer. The programme requires works to continue over some weekends and Cornwall Council would like to thank residents for their continued support, especially those closest to the landslip. 'There is no conclusive evidence as to the cause of the landslip, however Cornwall Council believes it was as a result of sub-surface water building up behind the wall. A number of new weep holes have been installed to enable any future build-up of groundwater to drain away. New weep holes will also be installed in the existing wall to either side of the new wall to deal with any subsurface water.' The council said the road would be open to vehicular access with work continuing to finish the retaining wall with masonry facing and parapet before the site is cleared completely. Cornwall Council is also proposing to strengthen the section of wall above Steamer Quay, requiring the rebuilding of the parapet. The party will be held from 12.30pm — FOLK invites anyone who lives in or uses Lower Kelly to bring a bottle and join in.
